The Oliver Wolcott Library is beginning their "Make a Splash" summer reading program for children from grades pre-school to 12. Several new programs are also being implemented for teens this summer as a result of a grant from the Litchfield Education Foundation.
"Make a Splash" at Oliver Wolcott Library this summer with OWL’s exciting Summer Reading Program for preschoolers through Grade 12. Come into the OWL by July 16 to sign up and receive your summer reading log.
This year, the theme for preschoolers-6th grade is “Make a Splash, Read!” Come to the Library and pick up your summer reading log. Keep track of the amount of time you spend reading or listening to stories in 15 minute increments. Check in every week with a librarian and receive stickers to put on the library’s summer reading murals, a different mural and sticker for each grade group. Reach the reading goal of 16 hours and earn a special ticket to the Aquarium’s Touch Tank on August 6.
For teens, OWL implemented a new, innovative online summer reading group. Teens can keep track of their reading goals, post reviews of books they loved or hated, and participate in polls and discussions. The website was set up by Children’s Librarian Lisa Shaia and is for members only. To join the online Teen Reading Group, simply email Mrs. Shaia, lshaia@owlibrary.org, for an invitation to join.
The online reading group is only the first part, however. Every Wednesday in July teens will be invited to attend the Teen Writer’s Club and the Teen Photography Club, with a pizza dinner in between the two programs. The Teen Writer’s Club will take place Wednesdays, July 7-28 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Don’t miss special guest author Natasha Friend on July 21.
The Teen Photography Club will be Wednesdays, July 7-28 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. with a special photography panel, including Peter Howe and John Kane, on July 28. The pizza dinner is every Wednesday from 6:30 -7:00 p.m. and is open to teens attending one or both programs! For more information about the summer reading program, visit our website at www.owlibrary.org or stop-in and ask us!
