Participants learned the fine art of basket weaving on Saturday afternoon from multi-talented Master Gardener, Roxann Lovell, owner of Aerie Mountain Garden, Gift, and Floral Shop in Barkhamsted (www.aeriemountain.com). They made a basic handled berry basket out of flexible rattan.

Saturday, July 3 - Bats: Earth's Allies Bats need friends now more than ever. Gerri Griswold, with the help of her Big Brown Bat, Theo, will discuss the extraordinary ups and horrifying downs (White Nose Syndrome) of Connecticut's bats and bats around the world. Weather permitting we'll step outside at dusk to count the emergence of our Big Brown Bat colony from the Green Barn. Refreshments will be served. 7:00 P.M., A.B. Ceder Room. Pre registration is required. Call 860-567-0857. Ms. Griswold asks that each participant makes a small donation to The Conservation Center in lieu of admission.

Saturday, July 17 - A Fair with Iceland: Iceland Affair Get to know your closest European neighbor a whole lot better! Our mini celebration of the Land of Fire and Ice features Icelandic Chickens, Sheep, Dogs, and Horses (DON'T CALL THEM PONIES!). Movies about the Gyrfalcon, Icelandic Horse, and the 1996 eruption of the volcano, Grimsvotn. A presentation about the spectacular natural beauty of Iceland by frequent flyer, Gerri Griswold will make you think, "Why haven't I ever visited Iceland?". More surprises to come. A complete schedule will be posted on our website www.whitememorialcc.org in late June. 11:00A.M. – 4:00P.M., A.B. Ceder Room, Activity Shed, and Museum Lawn. FREE... Saturday, July 10 - Tree Walk with WMF Forest Superintendent Lukas Hyder Tag along with Lukas as he helps you identify native trees, the opposite and alternate leaf arrangements which brand tree species, and the problems native plants face with the encroachment of invasive plants. 10:00 A.M., Meet in the Museum parking lot...FREE

Sunday, July 11 - Children's Survival Skills Workshop with Andy Dobos Help keep your child safe and more importantly, comfortable, in the woods. This workshop will give you and your children an understanding of the real hazards that can be found in the woods and your back yard, dispel myths about what we should really be worried about. We will also learn some techniques on how to avoid problems before they happen and what to do in an emergency. Every child will leave with a wilderness emergency kit containing a small flashlight, reflector for signaling, a multipurpose shelter/rain coat (plastic garbage bag) and a whistle, after having practiced with them during the workshop. This important workshop will work on lessening fear and panic and increasing awareness and confidence. For ages six and up. 10:00 A.M. – 2:30 P.M.. bring lunch and plenty of water! Members: $45.00 per child, Non members: $50.00 per child. A $5.00 donation per child benefits the Conservation Center. Parents and Guardians attend free of charge. Meet in front of the Museum. Pre registration and pre payment are required.

Presented by Three Red Trees School of Natural Living Co-founders Andy Dobos and Deneen Bernier. Deneen has worked as a Nature based Preschool teacher as well as summer camp instructor in addition to her primitive and survival skills experience. Andy, a Litchfield native, has experience teaching nature skills to homeschoolers as well as summer camp students to go along with years of primitive and survival skills practice and instruction.

Friday, July 16 - Star Gazing! A monthly astronomy program organized by members of the Litchfield Hills Amateur Astronomy Club and the Mattatuck Astronomical Society. Star gazing will follow (weather permitting). 8:00 P.M. – 10:00 P.M.. A.B. Ceder Room. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. You are invited to bring a lawn chair, your own telescope, or binoculars...FREE...Donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center's programming expenses

Sunday, July 18 - Fly Casting with Dr. Frank Schildgen from Trout Unlimited Dr. Frank's passion for this graceful sport runs as deep as a river. Learn about fly fishing from one of the best.
