Community Field to get improvements

Grants totaling $75,000 will allow the Parks and Recreation Commission to make improvements at Community Field that will include moving the walking track out of the outfield of the main baseball diamond.
Parks and Recreation Department Director Brent Hawkins announced last week that $45,000 grant has been awarded by the Seherr-Thoss Foundation and a $30,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant is coming from the state.
Under the plan for the field, the portion of the walking track running through right field and center field of the baseball field will be moved so it instead runs along the right field foul line to the right field fence, where it will turn left and follow the fence to the entrance to the field.
At that point, the track will turn left and connect with the existing track near the flagpole in leftfield.
The grant money will also be used to re-grade right and center fields to prevent runoff from pooling in center field and to cut down a grass embankment along the driveway leading to the parking lot. Trimming the embankment will improve traffic flow.
Work is likely to begin in mid to late-August, Hawkins said.
