The first phase of the Litchfield Community Greenway officially opened on Saturday with a ribbon-cutting at the entrance to a trail linking Bissell Road and Whites Woods Road in the White Memorial Foundation. Greenway committee Chairman Clifford Cooper, members of the committee and First Selectman Leo Paul took part in the ribbon-cutting. In the photos, top to bottom, the ribbon is cut, Paul talks about the open with selectman and committee member Bill Dranginis to the right, committee member Ann Curtis and Chris Combs walk the trail, and a sign marks the trail. The planned greenway would mostly follow the old Shepaug Railroad bed from Russell Street in Litchfield to the center of Bantam. The committee's long-range plan includes extending the greenway from Bantam to the border of Morris, at Stoddard Road, using grants and private funding. The greenway would allow bikers, runners and walkers to move safely between Litchfield and Bantam.
