The Litchfield Board of Burgesses has changed and date and place for a public hearing on how to honor military service on the borough green. The hearing will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. in the gym at Center School. It will NOT be held on Tuesday at the First Congregational Church in Litchfield as originally stated.
Borough Warden Lee Losee has said the hearing will address two questions:
- How can the borough, as a community, show thanks to local residents who are serving their country?
- To what extent, if any, should the borough allow privately posted displays of social comment on the borough green?
The hearing was called in response to a public outcry after burgesses voted Dec. 1 to forbid the placement of ribbons, bow, or similar items anywhere on the Litchfield green. Yellow ribbons have been placed on the green since 2003 to honor residents serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Residents may notice the Litchfield.bz meeting calendar also lists a regular burgess meeting on Feb. 2. The ribbon issue will not be discussed at that meeting, Losee said. The Feb. 2 meeting will address other borough business, he said.
