Addition approved for Litchfield Athletic Club

The owners of the Litchfield Athletic Club received approval Tuesday from the Planning and Zoning Commission for a two-story addition that will increase workout space and create rental offices for health services.

The approval contained the conditions that no mature evergreens will be cut down during construction and a stockade fence will be extended along a neighboring property line.

Club neighbor Barry Strom requested the conditions to protect his privacy.  Since 1972, Strom has lived next door to the club on property that also contains offices for his business,  Barry Strom Antiques & Restorations.

Strom came to the meeting on Tuesday night, but he did not address the commission until 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, when the addition came up on a long agenda.

“It’s official, I can say good morning to the commission,” Strom said.

The addition will increase the athletic club’s size by about 45 percent, from roughly 9,500 square feet to 13,752 square feet.  Alan Landau, who owns the club with Christopher Krone, has said construction should begin this winter and be finished next summer.

The new section will be added onto the east side of the building.  Additional parking and a new rain garden, filled with plants that filter storm water, will be built on the south side of the lot.

The first floor addition will include three offices, which will be rented out to health service providers,  Landau said.  The second floor addition will include a larger room for spinning classes; a personal training room; a larger area for child care; tanning rooms, and a small lounge.

The existing first floor will be reconfigured to increase the main aerobics studio after the addition is finished.

The Litchfield Athletic Club opened in 1997.  It has about 650 annual members.
